Kolkata was founded by job Charnok in August 1690 on the left bank of river Ganges (Hooghly). After London, Kolkata was the British Empire’s second city of pride and once capital of the British ruled India. Kolkata is the city of contrast having old mansions, modern high rises, traditionally symbol of communal harmony. Kolkata is distinctively noted for her spiritualism, intellect, art and culture, science, politics, industries and her pioneering role in the freedom movement of India.
